A NOTE ON THE NOTION OF A CLAIM TO ORIGIN
Subject: The route for the motorway running through the vineyards of the Valladolid-Soria region
The idea of origin represents a collective right based on tradition arising from ancient, loyal and consistent usage. It forms part of a regional and also national heritage of both cultural and economic value that is administered by those persons in possession of the appropriate know-how and management skills.
The boundaries that determine the areas corresponding to a specific origin are drawn up with extreme care as it is their particular biotopes that confer unique properties and characteristics on the products.
This explains why these protected areas cannot be moved.
Consequently, all infrastructures such as roads or building must be constructed outside these specially protected production areas.
Having visited the wine-growing region of the DUERO Valley, which enjoys the advantages of an ideally situated terrain over calcareous soil and is enhanced by its magnificent cultural setting, enhanced by the Cistercian Abbey, I have been able to witness at first hand the exceptional wine-growing vocation of this area which has placed a claim for a denomination of origin.
Any reduction in this wine-growing area must be avoided in the economic and cultural interests of this region in general and of the wine industry in particular.
